The experimental collective Teatro del Lemming was founded in Rovigo, Italy, in 1987 by musician and director Massimo Munaro. After just three years of activity, in 1990 the group received the Italian Totola Award for Best Direction for the performance “La città chipsa” (La città chipsa), and in 1996 the prestigious Giuseppe Bartolucci Award. From its inception, Teatro del Lemming has focused on exploring the emotional power of theatre in its relationship with and towards the audience. In the late 1990s, the theater began the “Tetralogy on Myths and the Spectator” series. This work led the group toward a new and exciting experience of direct, sensual, and dramatic engagement with the audience. This radical, physical connection between actors and audience members, the particular attention paid to the sensory impact of theater, and the unusual use of space in many of its projects, continue to distinguish Teatro del Lemming from other Italian theatre companies.
Teatro del Lemming, a regular at the A Part Festival, specializing in site-specific activities and the labyrinthine theater format, returns to Katowice with its oldest, signature performance for a single audience. “Edipo” with the telling subtitle “A Tragedy of the Senses for a Single Audience,” is the first part of a series titled “Tetralogy on Myths and the Spectator” (the other parts of the series are “Dioniso,” “Odisseo,” and “Amore e Psiche”). The performance assumes direct, dramatic, and sensual engagement with the audience during each performance.
The most important character in the performance is the audience itself. They assume the role of the titular Oedipus. Blindfolded for most of the performance, they are forced to experience the play through their other senses (touch, smell, and hearing). The actors serve as guides and “voices of destiny,” guiding the audience through the mythical story.
“Edipo” is a manifesto of Teatro del Lemming’s sensory theatre. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the play’s premiere. The Katowice production of “Edipo” is the Polish premiere.
